The Indochina War - Dictionary
The Indochina War in dictionary form, by the leading French and foreign specialists
The historiography of the Indochina War is enriched for the first time by a dictionary encompassing the essential themes of the conflict that, between 1945 and 1954, marked the beginning of decolonisation for the French Empire. Research carried out by some fifty civilian and military specialists has resulted in the compilation of around one thousand entries shedding light on subjects and figures that are all too often treated only briefly in most works on the subject.

In this perspective, the Dictionary of the Indochina War constitutes an exceptional and unique working document for all those with a passion for this period, who will find, within its pages, answers to a great many questions.
The richness of the work lies in the great diversity of topics covered: the military and technical aspects of the conflict sit alongside cultural and literary entries relating to the war. The numerous entries presenting the international context and the concise biographies of political and military leaders, both supporters and opponents, also allow for a better understanding of the events that shook the Indochinese peninsula.
In order to avoid an overly "Franco-French" reading of history, particular attention has been paid to entries concerning the countries of former French Indochina, and primarily the political movements and figures who acted in favour of Vietnamese independence. The role of the United States, and that of China, is also given substantial treatment.
The Dictionary of the Indochina War fills a significant gap and makes an essential contribution to the historiography of the war, from the beginning of French involvement in 1945 to their final withdrawal from Vietnam two years after the defeat at Dien Bien Phu. It represents an indispensable reference for all those working on the subject or simply wishing to deepen their knowledge.
