Liberating France, Invading Germany - The French Army at the Front, 1944–1945
As France prepares to celebrate in 2025 the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this book recounts the final months of the conflict through the eyes of French Army photographers. Following the landings of summer 1944 and the liberation of Paris, the two armies from the west and the south joined forces in eastern France. This marked the beginning of the Battle of the Vosges and then the Battle of Alsace, which shaped the autumn and winter of 1944–45 through the successive liberations of Mulhouse, Strasbourg and Colmar.
The beginning of 1945 saw the start of the Germany campaign and the advance of French troops into enemy territory, marked at the end of March by the crossing of the Rhine, the capture of Stuttgart and the entry into Austria. Meanwhile, on the Atlantic front, German pockets of resistance had organised themselves: the "Atlantic pockets" were the scene of fierce fighting.
