A tactical success achieved in a few hours of violent cannonade, the Battle of the Chesapeake Bay is above all a strategic victory: the glorious day when the Royale changed the history of the world. This engagement is a reminder of the decisive role of naval combat in high-intensity warfare. At the head of a fleet transformed in response to the defeat of 1763, Admiral de Grasse led his men to victory on 5 September 1781. They distinguished themselves through their combat readiness, adaptability, endurance, spirit of innovation, interoperability, tactical genius and, above all, their moral fortitude. In this decisive naval battle, the Comte de Grasse put the finishing touch to Versailles's strategy to undermine British power, challenged by the American rebels who cherished liberty. He became a national hero in the United States: a tribute is regularly paid to him by naming US Navy vessels after him. This work presents this tactical success in detail. But it is not limited to this single battle alone: it spans two decades of French naval history and provides a deeper understanding of the capability, operational and human developments that led to this resounding victory.
