Who knows that France and the United States went to war? In the second half of the 1790s, these two formerly allied powers entered into open conflict.

Although war was never officially declared, French and Americans clashed in naval engagements on both sides of the Atlantic, seizing each other's vessels in large numbers and causing several thousand dead and wounded. This episode, which passed into posterity under the name of the Quasi-War, arose from commercial and diplomatic disputes between the two countries. It also stemmed, and perhaps above all, from a sense of betrayal felt by France when the United States appeared to draw closer to their former common enemy: Great Britain.

American historians have paid great attention to this singular moment, as it was their country's first conflict with a major European power since independence. Éric Schnakenbourg offers a comprehensive history of this war in French, drawing on previously unpublished archival sources. His research allows us to discover this little-known episode of revolutionary France.
