A fighter pilot embarked on American aircraft carriers during the Pacific War, a gunner aboard a British warship during the Battle of Trafalgar, or an oarsman in an ancient battle: it is this little-known aspect of naval battles that is brought to the fore here, offering a vivid, ground-level portrait of the greatest maritime confrontations in history.
