24 February 2022 marks the beginning of the Russian forces' invasion of Ukraine, described by Vladimir Putin as a "special military operation".

Seeking to seize the country within a matter of days, the Russian army attacks from Crimea, from the east of the country, and from Belarus, but numerous difficulties — including an unexpected Ukrainian resistance — hamper the Russian advance, forcing the Kremlin to revise its plans.

To the south and east, the advance of Moscow's forces is the most rapid, threatening Ukrainian cities along the Sea of Azov.

Mariupol is one such city: a major steel-producing centre from the Soviet era, home to the Azovstal complex, the city quickly comes under Russian and separatist artillery fire. Defended by territorial units, marine infantry, and the soldiers of the "Azov" battalion, Mariupol is set to become one of the fiercest battles of the conflict.

This work offers a narrative account of this highly symbolic confrontation — one that struck observers with its duration and intensity — illustrated throughout with situation maps.
