Beneath Paris, the shelters remain. More precisely, those decreed by the Passive Defence on the eve of the Second World War. Several thousand — a few hundred of which were equipped to respond to the possibility of a gas attack — were thus fitted out in the basements of buildings, in the Métro, or even in the old quarries. Many were never dismantled. Traces of them can be seen in numerous cellars, and more substantial structures still populate green spaces or the sub-basements of government offices and businesses. Long forgotten today, the underground shelters remain witnesses to the dark hours of history as well as to more glorious ones, since it was from the depths of Denfert-Rochereau that the liberating insurrection of August 1944 was coordinated.
