In 1915, by taking the war to the Dardanelles, Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, sought to break the deadlock of trench warfare in France and Belgium. To that end, he succeeded in convincing the British government and its allies to attempt a southern strike against the Ottoman Empire. The attack was to be carried out by the Allied navy, which was to force the Dardanelles strait and bombard Constantinople. Nothing went as planned and the Allies were forced to land troops. These were swiftly halted by the Turkish army corps under Mustapha Kemal, the future Kemal Atatürk.
