Didier Lodieu retraces the history of the 272. Infanterie-Division with the support of that division's veterans' association. All the veterans who fought in Normandy contributed their testimonies, documents and photographs during the 1990s, before the association was dissolved. The division's formation began in the Lyon region, then continued in the south of France. In early July it was called up to halt the Canadian advance south of Caen. But its rail transfer proved costly due to air attacks. Fighting in separate detachments and without heavy weapons support, the German soldiers fought courageously, often at the cost of heavy sacrifice. Through the horror, Germans and Canadians came to respect one another despite the war that set them against each other. An important book on the Battle of Normandy.
