THE SACRIFICE OF THE FALLSCHIRMJÄGER. VOLUME 1. FROM 26 JULY TO 5 AUGUST 1944
After months of relentless combat since 6 June 1944, the paratroopers of General Meindl, integrated into his II. Fallschirmjäger-Korps, had lost half their strength. Yet they still showed the same fierce determination to resist the American forces.

But when Operation Cobra was launched, these paratroopers would have to face the Vth US Army Corps, composed of the famous 2nd US Inf Div, 35th and 5th US Inf Div, reinforced by armour. With virtually no heavy weapons support, the paratroopers would put up fierce resistance. As their commander had ordered: "a Fallschirmjäger never surrenders."
In an American press article, the following was written about these "Green Devils": "Everything has a price. In a single day, our G.I.s fought hard to gain only an orchard. The reason is that these paratroopers fight not only with great cunning and skill, but also with exceptional courage. They are formidably trained, and while fighting, they keep their prisoners."
Didier Lodieu revisits the Battle of Normandy alongside General Meindl, whom he had introduced to readers in "La Division Meindl" and "Mourir pour St Lô". This work required nearly 3,000 hours of research. It had to be supervised by his friend Thierry Guilbert, who scrutinised every battle and every location, as the author no longer had the necessary distance, after 13 months of uninterrupted work, to complete the book.
