A retired Bundeswehr paratrooper, the author, Rüdiger W.A. Franz, immerses the reader in an unprecedented account of the formation of a Waffen-SS disciplinary unit: the SS-Fallschirmjäger-Bataillon 500.

It retraces the battalion's parachute training — thoroughly documented — its first engagements in Serbia (winter 1943/44) and in Budapest (April 1944).

Illustrated with numerous photographs and enriched by testimonies provided to the author by veterans of the SS paratroopers, this first volume of the work, entitled "Capturing Tito!", focuses in its second part on the battalion's airborne assault on the town of Drvar (as part of Operation "Rösselsprung"), nestled in the heart of the Bosnian mountains, ten days before the Normandy Landings.

There, a merciless battle raged against Yugoslav partisans on 25–26 May 1944... Would the SS-Fallschirmjäger accomplish their mission at Drvar?

Maps and photographs taken on location in 2018 will also accompany the reader in discovering this little-known corner of the Balkans.
