This work is a plea for intelligence and a tribute to those who practise it.

The analysis of the past, from the "drôle de guerre" of 1940 onwards, allows us to trace the evolution of this discipline leading to the current Direction du renseignement militaire — through multiple experiences on various theatres: the Gulf, Chad, the Balkans, Cambodia and Somalia.

By unpicking the mechanisms behind this evolution of intelligence — from neglect and even contempt, through to its recognition and even predominance in today's conflicts — one comes to better understand that the military commander must know in order to decide and act.

Today, Islamist terrorism is accelerating the evolution and growing importance of intelligence, further reinforcing its joint and professional character.

Throughout this work, we follow one of the key links in the chain, the 13th Parachute Dragoon Regiment, specialised in human intelligence gathering; we also come to understand that intelligence is not solely the preserve of specialists and is above all everyone's concern.

The work "Renseignement et Action" constitutes a plea for intelligence and a tribute to those who practise it, humbly and discreetly. The analysis of the past, beginning with his father's experience of the "drôle de guerre" of 1940, allows the author to trace the evolution of intelligence that led to the current Direction du Renseignement militaire, through multiple experiences — sometimes harrowing — on various theatres: the Gulf War, Chad, the Balkans, Cambodia and Somalia. 

The book concludes with the realistic observation that it is impossible to know everything and that surprise will come sooner or later.

Patrick Manificat:

A Saint-Cyr graduate of the "Vercors" class (1960–1962), General Patrick Manificat served in several parachute units. In addition to the special operations of the 1er RPIMa and the clandestine operations of the 11e Choc, he took part in numerous intelligence-gathering operations behind the Iron Curtain as a member of the French Military Liaison Mission in Potsdam, to which he was attached for three years.

Having served as a professor at the École supérieure de guerre and as an auditor at the Institut des Hautes Études de Défense Nationale, he went on to head the Army Intelligence Bureau and the Research sub-directorate of the Direction du renseignement militaire.

He ended his career as commandant of the École nationale des sous-officiers d'active at Saint-Maixent.
