When a passionate local historian meets someone who loves the city where he grew up, it inevitably ends in an exchange of stories and anecdotes. But when both share a passion for historical photographs, it draws them even closer together, and projects begin to take shape. Thierry Chion and Jonathan Sobielga share a love of photographic testimony depicting Normandy during the war.

When the former saw the latter's extraordinary photographic collection, it seemed obvious to both that they should share their common passion with a wider audience. 

The idea of presenting these remarkable and largely unpublished photographs, accompanied by short texts, quickly became obvious.

Some shots were taken in the heat of the action; others take you on a journey alongside soldiers through the streets of Rouen, through the smoke of fires or the dust of freshly collapsed ruins.

Moments of fear and anxiety, moments of joy at the Liberation… many of these historical photographs will captivate you. This exclusive iconographic wealth is undeniably what makes this book so valuable.
