Occupied by the Germans on 17 June 1940, the town of Falaise — birthplace of William the Conqueror — was about to endure four difficult years under the heel of the occupier. But an equally painful ordeal awaited its population: in August 1944, the German 7th Army, in full retreat, was caught in the Falaise-Chambois Pocket. After ferocious fighting, the Allied armies prevailed, but the region lay devastated. This work brings that particularly painful period back to life through original photographs, eyewitness accounts and everyday objects.
