The Allied landings of 6 June 1944 have monopolised the Norman memory of the Second World War, to the point of overshadowing vast swathes of the history of that period. Normans are inexhaustible when it comes to the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy, yet they are far less forthcoming about the Occupation, or else content themselves with lamentable generalities. But why this concealment of the Occupation period? There is a certain unease in speaking of it, as though one feared to raise the subject — as if, in short, one had something to hide. Would a dive into the hushed world of the archives provide clarification and explanations for these embarrassed silences? This is what the work brings to light, going beyond received ideas about the occupier and the Normans.
