In late 1941, a first privately circulated and anonymous book gave a precise account of this battle. Unobtainable today, this new edition — requested by the officer-cadets of the École militaire interarmes, whose intake took the name "Bataille des Alpes" — has been greatly expanded with texts, biographies, photographs and maps, enabling the reader to understand the situation, the course of events, and the decisions taken on a front wrongly regarded as secondary.

Max Schiavon, doctor of history, headed research at the Service historique de la Défense. A specialist in contemporary military history, he has recently published La Guerre du Rif (Editions Pierre de Taillac), Le front d'Orient 1915–1918 (Tallandier), Le Général Salan, défenseur de l'Empire (ETAI), as well as Le Général Vauthier, un précurseur méconnu and Les combats héroïques du capitaine Manhès, both with Editions Pierre de Taillac.
