The French were profoundly marked by the tragedies of the Terrible Year. They emerged from this episode of national history as much humiliated as frustrated. But what role did women play in this episode?

Collective memory struggles to acknowledge their contribution to the war effort. Yet French women were not merely victims. At every level of society, women committed themselves and took part in the effort imposed by the situation. The aim is to recall their daily lives during the conflict, but also to measure the impact of their commitment. The reality of women's engagement at the time is today partly obscured or distorted, often reduced to a romanticised image. Recalling their struggle can help render them the justice they deserve.
