La Redoute Ruinée, Sentinel of the Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard
Perched at 2,400 m., the fort of the Redoute dominates the Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard, watching over it like a sleeping sentinel.
Since the Neolithic period, this pass has been one of the main routes for crossing the Alps. Over the centuries, it was developed to facilitate passage.
In the Petit-Saint-Bernard region, the post of the Redoute Ruinée was built at the Col de la Traversette. It was occupied year-round by a detachment of chasseurs alpins, living in isolation and enduring the vagaries of the weather. In 1897, the post was fortified with the construction of an enclosure that gave it the appearance of a fort.
In June 1940, for four days, the Italians attempted to advance towards Bourg-Saint-Maurice and seize the Redoute Ruinée, in vain. Its garrison, surrounded, only left on 2 July, receiving full military honours from the enemy.
In 1945, French artillery destroyed the Redoute Ruinée to facilitate attacks by the chasseurs alpins against the Italo-German troops holding the sector.
Today, in winter, many tourists ski on this history-laden site, unaware of the dramas and moments of joy that unfolded there.
