Chaberton: the illustrated history of the most powerful fort in the world.

« The fort of the clouds », « the highest and most powerful fort in the world ». Superlatives abound when it comes to describing Fort Chaberton, designed and built by the Italian army from the late 19th century onwards.

A source of great national pride in Italy for the feat that its construction represented at the time, it was feared on the French side, as it posed a serious threat to the border and the Briançonnais region. While it now lies on French territory and was listed as a historic monument in February 2021, the history of its construction, the objectives assigned to it, and the battles that led to its neutralisation remain largely unknown. Drawing on archives and numerous testimonies, this book tells the story of the fort from its origins to its decommissioning after 1945, as well as all the studies undertaken by the French side in their efforts to destroy it.

One hundred and twenty previously unpublished photographs allow the reader to form a precise picture of what took place.
