In 1794, it was the scene of fierce fighting between the French invaders and Sardinian troops. In 1860, the annexation of Savoy created a new border running through the pass itself, gradually leading to the loss of the Lanslebourg alpine pastures.

Little by little, Italy became a potential enemy, prompting France to fortify the pass by constructing the fort and barracks of La Turra.

From 1882 onwards, the presence of the army influenced local life. The economy developed, communication routes were created. The military provided assistance to the population in the event of natural disasters. The mountain environment was mastered and skiing was introduced.

In the 1930s, faced with the rise of fascism, the fortifications were improved. In June 1940, they withstood — with varying degrees of success — Italian assaults. In 1944, the valley was ravaged by German troops, and in 1945, the summits around the pass were the scene of bitter fighting.

But through its sacrifices, the Mont-Cenis plateau became French.

This work traces the entire military history of the pass, with substantial chapters devoted to the fort and barracks of La Turra, as well as to the battles of 1940 and 1945.
