This book does not aim to retell the official history of the Armée des Alpes. Nor is it an exhaustive compilation; the idea is to provide a sense and a general understanding of what these troops were in 1939 and 1940, particularly in the key sector of the Rhône and the Saône.

This work places the fighting of the Army of the Alps across its two fronts in the perspective of limiting the strategic damage in June 1940. Its aim is to shed light on this almost unknown front — modest yet victorious, as was the Army of the Alps of 1792.

Both authors, who live in the Rhône-Alpes region, share a passion for local history. A Doctor of History, Jérôme Croyet is curator of the collections at the Musée de l'Emperi and the author of several works on Napoleon's armies. Stéphane Lavit has already published four books, on the American divisions of the Liberation and the Maquis of the Ain.
