Production was then accelerated on numerous projects that had been unable to reach completion for lack of funding. An initial effort focused on divisional artillery, then in 1943 on more powerful heavy artillery. The balance was finally achieved at the time of the operations in Normandy, when most of the materiel — towed or self-propelled — was committed to action. But while the quality of equipment and ammunition was paramount, the numerous and high-performing radio sets, the observation aircraft integrated into the units, and the gun tractors made it possible to achieve maximum effectiveness by giving the artillerymen the ability to deliver accurate fire rapidly, regardless of visibility, terrain, or weather conditions. As a result, the field artillery was, with 300 battalions at the start of 1945, the most powerful and most modern in the world.
