The Ariete Division is without doubt the best-known unit of the Italian Royal Army, the Regio Esercito, to have fought during the Second World War.

The spearhead of Italian forces in North Africa, its name remains associated with the victories of the Afrika-Korps and the battles that punctuated operations in Libya and Egypt from 1941 to 1942.

Like the Italian troops as a whole, however, it suffered from inadequate equipment and logistics, which placed it, de facto, in a position of clear inferiority — both qualitatively and quantitatively — relative to its German ally and its adversaries.

Alternately criticised and praised by Erwin Rommel, the division gradually gained experience alongside the powerful German war machine, and its many victories earned it the status of an elite unit, recognised by all.

A specialist in Italian armed forces during the Second World War, David Zambon delivers, with this new work in the "Archives de guerre" collection, an in-depth study, supported by previously unpublished iconography, of the Ariete's engagement — from its formation to its final act of bravery during the fighting at El Alamein.
