The German Failure on the Marne 30 May–13 June 1918
This book is the translation of the work entitled Growing Difficulties 1918 – Futile Struggle in Front of Compiègne, Villers-Cotterêts and Reims, volume 33 of the series « Die Schlachten des Weltkrieges », published by the Reichsarchiv in 1930.
No French translation of this book has ever been published, even though it had been translated after the war by the French Army. This recent translation was produced by Christian Dumont, Luc Dumont and Jean-Claude L'Huillier.
This text covers the decisive period from 31 May to 13 June 1918, seen from the German side.
After the German breakthrough on the Chemin des Dames, achieved on 27 May, the French Army was thrown into disarray and a breach opened in its front. The Germans poured through it with their 1st and 7th Armies, reaching the Marne in just four days. Everything had started well, but the machine seized up and the French regrouped.
