Indochina – Dien Bien Phu and the Battles of the Impossible
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu remains the final episode of a war in Indochina in which the finest troops of the French army never ceased to display unwavering bravery and heroism.
It is in this strategic basin of Upper Tonkin that a true fortified camp was established, protected by three outlying strongpoints to the North — " Gabrielle ", " Anne-Marie " and " Béatrice " — and one point to the South named " Isabelle ".
Dien Bien Phu was rapidly encircled by the Viet Minh main battle force which, under the command of General Giap, launched its assault on the 15,000 men of the French forces from 13 March 1954. After 57 days and 57 nights of fierce fighting, the garrison of the fortified camp, completely surrounded and out of ammunition, was forced to lay down its arms on 7 May 1954 at 17:30.
An album featuring a great many colour photographs to relive step by step this tragedy that definitively sounded the death knell of French ambitions in the Far East.
