Among all the roles women were able to fulfil in wartime, one of the hardest and most improbable was that of sniper.

While at the beginning of the war women snipers were isolated cases, their numbers grew rapidly following the creation of the Central School for the Training of Women Snipers. They faced enemy fire, harsh weather conditions, and hours or days of complete immobility. The involvement of Soviet women in the Second World War — by virtue of their numbers and their role — was an unprecedented event in the history of the world.

More than 100,000 of them enlisted in the regular army or joined the partisans. Eighty-seven received the highest distinction of Hero of the Soviet Union. Lyudmila Pavlichenko, Roza Shanina, Nina Petrova, Aliya Moldagulova, Nina Lobkovskaya, Liza Mironova — women of extraordinary destiny who, before the war, were teachers or students, and for whom the desire to defend their country and avenge their families was so fierce that they became elite snipers.
