Dieppe 1942. Another book on the Dieppe Raid, some will say. A different book, others will argue. This work is indeed different for several reasons. It does not cover the raid as a whole. It focuses on a single regiment — the armoured regiment. Photographs showing the Canadian tanks are plentiful. Yet this unit has never been the subject of a book in French. And yet, what a series of firsts: first Canadian armoured regiment to come under fire against the German army on European soil, first engagement of Churchill tanks…

Many legends surround this unit. We dispel them here. Not a single tank entered the town, and the track damage cannot be attributed to the Dieppe pebbles. It was the rounds from the German guns defending Dieppe that destroyed most of the tracks. Only three men returned to England from among the crews of the 28 tanks and seven Scout Cars that had landed. The Germans killed or captured the rest.

This account also examines the armoured landing craft (TLC) used to transport the tanks. Finally, it covers the sappers tasked with facilitating the advance of the armour across the pebbles.

Once in position with limited forces, they establish defensive positions between Caumont-l'Éventé and Bérigny, awaiting the rest of the division. Inevitably, the Americans attack in force with elite divisions such as the 29th US Inf Div, the 2nd US Inf Div and the 1st US Inf Div. A genuine fight to the death unfolds between the two sides.

The Fallschirmjäger rapidly lose between 300 and 400 men per day, barely replaced. They lack heavy support and the Luftwaffe is absent from the skies. It falls to them to engage the fighter-bombers with Flak or machine guns. Apart from the Meindl Corps assault gun brigade, they have no armour to assist them, yet must face four armoured battalions…
