THEY FOUGHT May-June 1940 - Unpublished Photos and Testimonies of the Battle of France
The defeat of 1940 remains the greatest political and moral drama to have shaken France in the 20th century. Beaten in six weeks, the French have since retained the impression of an ill-equipped national army and a poorly commanded country, quicker to flee than to resist the enemy.
More broadly, the "syndrome of forty" is a deep trauma in the collective memory that still today plays its part in the recurring sense of decline and lack of confidence among the French towards themselves.
And yet, what are we really talking about? Did the French army truly dishonour itself in flight? Drawing for the first time on images taken by French soldiers rather than the usual photographs from German propaganda, this book provides irrefutable proof to the contrary. It shows that the French army fought with courage, and also that the enemy committed unforgivable crimes from the very outset of the conflict.
Here, in images, is the real and obscured history of the deadly and often heroic fighting waged by the French army from 10 May to 25 June 1940.
