Paul Malmassari had already published, in the early 1990s with Heimdal, a reference work on the subject of armoured trains — a topic generally little treated. An undisputed specialist in the field, the author this time proposes a new and very different approach to the history of these steel giants dependent on the railways.

From their origins to the present day, the armoured trains of more than sixty states are covered. Those of Russia, where they played an important role — notably in the civil war of 1917–1922 — and those of Germany — the Panzerzüge — and of France during both world wars are also described. But armoured trains have a history across four continents, including in countries one would not suspect of ever having fielded them.

Its particular strength lies in combining undeniable technical precision with explanations of the historical contexts in which these «monsters of the rails» intervened.

A reference work not to be missed. The author, a graduate of Saint-Cyr from the Capitaine Guilleminot intake (1975–1977), Lieutenant-Colonel (ret.) Paul Malmassari served as an officer in the armoured branch, a choice driven by his interest in tanks and their history. After serving in schools as an instructor, in regiments — notably at the 501e/503e RCC at Mourmelon as deputy commanding officer — and in various international headquarters (UN/New York, NATO/Heidelberg and ECMM/Sarajevo). For ten years, he commanded the Division of Traditions and Symbolism of the Defence at the Service historique de la Défense. A doctor of history, he has published, in addition to the present encyclopaedia, five reference works: two on armoured trains, including his doctoral thesis defended under the supervision of Professor Jean-Charles Jauffret (Soteca, 2010), one on tanks of the First World War (Soteca, 2009) and one on UN armoured vehicles and their use (La Plume du Temps, 2000). Since 2012 he has been director of the Fondation pour la mémoire de la guerre d'Algérie, des combats du Maroc et de Tunisie (FM-GACMT).
