While the family patriarch still recalls the armed conflicts of 1870, his sons Henri and Charles find themselves on opposite sides of the same trenches in 1914; Guillaume fights against Tsarist Russia, while Eugène, the beloved youngest, is lost to the war. The next generation endures the war of 1939–1945 and Nazism, with Guillaume's eldest son drafted into the Wehrmacht and sent to the Eastern Front. Meanwhile, in the small town of Bischwiller, anxious women watch the parade of uniforms go by, must comply with German restrictions, and wait in vain for news of their loved ones.
