The Citroën Traction Avant was the most-produced car in France before 1940: more than 250,000 examples were on the roads of the country and the world at the time. It is therefore no surprise to find it, during the Second World War, accompanying both armies and civilian populations on every front, in every territory, including the most remote. The omnipresence of this car was undoubtedly also due to its performance: modern and reliable, it was used by the French army, primarily as a requisitioned vehicle, and perhaps even more so by the German army, which employed it extensively across all its areas of operation, and finally, by the Resistance.

By accompanying every mobility need arising from the conflict, it became an indispensable participant, from the pre-war period through to the Liberation, then meeting the new demands that emerged after 1945. It appears in everyday life as well as in the great moments of History. It is this reality, spread over a dozen years around the conflict, that is revealed through this collection of period photographs, most of them never previously published.

THE AUTHOR Emmanuel Cardoux works in the automotive industry. He has been passionate about the Citroën Traction Avant his entire life. By chance, he once came across an old photograph of this iconic car: that was the starting point of a collection of vintage photographs spanning nearly fifteen years, which formed the basis of this book. He also enjoys driving through country roads in a Traction, particularly appreciating his 1939 7C éco and his 1937 11B.
