Throughout this second volume, the turbulent fates of U94, U995, U168, U250, U480, U117 and the crews who took them into battle against all odds — and under the relentless, merciless pressure of Allied aircraft — unfold one by one.

These submariners displayed incredible courage but could not keep pace with the technological evolution that was, more often than not, in the Allies' favour. When battered beneath a rain of bombs, their U-boat would plunge into a final dive, with only a faint hope remaining: the Tauchretter. This last-chance rescue device is the subject of a detailed chapter that sheds light on how men trapped inside a steel coffin managed to escape and see the sun again.
