On 14 June 1800, during the Second Italian Campaign, Napoleon narrowly won the Battle of Marengo (Piedmont). This celebrated engagement pitted 28,000 French troops against 31,000 Austrians under General Mélas. Initially overwhelmed, the French were forced to fall back nearly seven kilometres. Believing victory secured, Mélas handed over command to a subordinate and returned to Alessandria. This pause allowed Napoleon to concentrate his forces and, crucially, for General Desaix's corps to arrive as reinforcement. Around 5 o'clock in the afternoon, a violent French counter-attack drove the Austrians into retreat, at the cost of Desaix's life — undoubtedly the hero of the day. This great victory led to French occupation of Lombardy and, above all, consolidated Napoleon's authority in France.
