David Galula

The life of David Galula, who died in 1967 at the age of 48, was, according to his Canadian biographer Alain Cohen, "brief but extraordinary." Born in 1919 in Sfax (Tunisia), into a prominent family of the Jewish community, a graduate of Saint-Cyr in 1940, he was struck from the rolls the following year under the Vichy laws on the status of Jews. Reinstated in 1943, he took part in the fighting that carried him to the heart of Germany. There followed eleven years spent observing communist insurgencies in China, Malaya, the Philippines, and also in the Balkans. From this unique experience emerged the principles that would guide him in Algeria, where he successfully pacified his zone of Kabylia — a historic cradle of rebellion since the conquest of 1830. A subtle account and an indispensable testimony on this conflict.
