This account is a testimony to the Algerian War, to the military operations in which the author — a paratroop officer in the Foreign Legion — took part, as well as to the generals' putsch of April 1961.

On graduating from officer school in 1954, Pierre Montagnon — top of his class — chose the Legion's paratroopers. He remained with them until 1961, first as a platoon commander for several years, then as a company commander. This book is intended as a testimony to that period lived intensely in Algeria — a testimony to fighting that, while never on the scale of Verdun, demanded heroism and sacrifice on both sides.

A testimony to the quality of the troops among whom he had the honour to serve. A testimony to events where politics met the military: May 1958 and the return of General de Gaulle, as well as the revolt of the Centurions in April 1961, in which the author took part. While Pierre Montagnon makes no secret of where his heart lay, his account also seeks to cast a lucid and unsentimental eye on a land that France had shaped, but where causes for revolt were, alas, far from lacking.
