The role of infantry in the Battle of Normandy in June, July and August 1944

Many summarise the Battle of Normandy as tank clashes in the bocage or on the Caen plain. Others think of Patton's armoured breakout. Yet infantry divisions were in the majority. It is they who fight on 6 June, on both the Allied and German sides. It is American infantrymen who advance through the Cotentin to prepare a line of departure for Patton's 3rd Army. It is also the German infantry trying to hold the line against the Allies when the Panzer divisions, outnumbered, can no longer maintain the front.
