Through several hundred period photographs, the odyssey of this American division — which landed in Provence in August 1944 after a long campaign in Italy — takes us to the heart of Germany, where the unit became the first to enter the Dachau concentration camp. It had previously liberated part of southern France, then pushed up the Rhône valley to the Vosges. With many Native American soldiers in its ranks, the 45th Division covered itself in glory through grueling fighting that stands comparison with the Battle of Normandy, which has since monopolized the spotlight. 96 pages — 270 photographs and illustrations. Author biography: Stéphane Lavit is passionate about history and everything related to the Second World War. A living history re-enactor and collector, he is the founder of the living history group Overlord 44. He has devoted many years to the study of the 45th American Division, which took part in 1944 in the liberation of the Rhône-Alpes region.
