It was in April 1917 that, for the first time, the Canadian infantry divisions were grouped together within a single army corps. This corps achieved a major early success by capturing Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917 (and in the days that followed). This victory marked the birth of Canadian national identity through a glorious feat of arms.

In August 1917, the Canadians were engaged in a particularly gruelling battle: the assault on the major mining city of Lens. The battle quickly became bogged down and ultimately yielded no significant advance. The city would remain in German hands until the end of the war.
