In the first volume of his Memoirs, Pierre Montagnon recounted his war in Algeria, from November 1954 to 1961, in the ranks of the Legion's paratroopers.

Returned to civilian life after 22 April 1961, he did not give up. Having clandestinely returned to Algiers to face the inevitable independence, he joined the team that would be named the "Soviet des capitaines". Leading the Hussein-Dey sector, he conducted the struggle against the FLN, striving to organise those who resisted.

Aware that the real fight lay in the interior, he led the Ouarsenis maquis at the end of March 1962, bringing together a handful of Europeans and harkis from Bachaga Boualam. In order to avoid a fratricidal struggle against government forces, he was compelled, on the following 6 April, to cease his action.

In these sincere and lucid pages, without bitterness or ulterior motives, the author evokes his combat, carried out with his head held high, to save what could be saved of the French presence in Algeria.
