After the end of the Algerian War, General de Gaulle relied on one man to transform an army that had become an instrument of colonial order-keeping into a modern force equipped with nuclear weapons, intended primarily to maintain France's rank and sovereignty in Europe.

A graduate of the École Polytechnique, resistance fighter, deportee, key architect of France's nuclear arsenal, military theorist and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Ailleret implemented General de Gaulle's military policy until his tragic death in 1968.

His true role had remained little known until his granddaughter discovered exceptional family archives. Based on the exploitation of these previously unpublished documents, this book brings together the proceedings of a colloquium held at the École Militaire, devoted to the figure of this exceptional officer who became de Gaulle's strategist.
