The centurions refers to those French officers of the 1950s. Many served in Indochina and all fought in Algeria.

Pierre Montagnon is one of them. From 1954, he fights alongside the parachute légionnaires to keep Algeria French. In early 1961, the Centurions are more committed than ever to "Algérie française" , while the political power in Paris, embodied by General de Gaulle, is increasingly less so. This divergence will spark the revolt of the former against the latter. Captain Pierre Montagnon takes part in the Algiers putsch.

He presents here the phases, origins and consequences of the events, as well as the various protagonists, and — free from any partisan judgement — offers a testimony on the state of mind of those soldiers who disobeyed out of loyalty to what they had been called upon to accomplish in Algeria.
