The military history of the Second World War is increasingly focused on individual destinies and the daily lives of soldiers. With the inexorable passing of witnesses from that era, a part of their lived experience also disappears — so many pages of history that should lead us to reflect on our good fortune in knowing peace.

Through a chance encounter, the author of this work came to know Georg Meyer, a German veteran with whom he formed a particularly close bond. The former soldier was absolutely determined to recount his life and pass on his experience to younger generations. After several years of interviews and correspondence, Charles Dieuleveu undertook to write his memoirs. But Georg Meyer also evokes the journey of two other wartime comrades — intertwined destinies — notably that of Fritz, certainly less talkative, but with a life story equally worthy of interest.

In 1944, Georg and Fritz took part in the Battle of Normandy, on the front line. One was a sergeant in one of the infantry regiments of the "Frundsberg" Division, and the second a grenadier and sharpshooter in the "Leibstandarte" Division. From the mid-1920s to the German reconstruction, Georg Meyer gives us an unflinching account of his and their experiences and destinies. Essential reading for all specialists of German units engaged in Normandy 1944 and all enthusiasts of military history!
