In 1871, Germany annexed Alsace-Lorraine. Yet while it conquered the region materially, it failed to win the hearts of many Alsatians and Lorrainers. In December 1917, Charles, a 19-year-old from Alsace-Lorraine, was conscripted — against his will, like 380,000 others — to wear the field grey uniform of the German army.
Drawing on his war notebooks, Charles recounts his participation in the great battles of 1918, which would lead him — into the very jaws of death — to the Battle of Belleau Wood, 80 kilometres from Paris, where the Allies would seize the initiative and drive the German forces back until the final victory.
Charles also confides his most intimate feelings for a young Frenchwoman he met during this period, behind the front lines, in the town of Laon.
A hundred years after the end of the Great War, his grandchildren decided to complete his manuscript in his memory.
This book is not a work of fiction — all the events described truly took place.
