The Soviet victory at Stalingrad, despite the losses, marks the beginning of the Red Army's transformation. Driven by ambitious generals (and an omnipotent Stalin), it gradually changed beyond recognition, bearing almost no resemblance to the army of the summer of 1941. Despite German resistance, the Soviets pressed on towards the very heart of the III. Reich, applying their doctrine of deep battle.

The resurgent Red Army is also one of massive confrontations, such as Kursk, and major offensives such as Bagration, with a front stretching from the Black Sea to the Baltic.

It is an entirely new Red Army that arrives at the gates of Berlin in the spring of 1945, the ultimate instrument of the USSR — one that even the Western Allies regarded with unease…
