While works on the two most recent world wars abound and every aspect has been covered in exhaustive detail, it seemed important to us to republish Alfred Donéaud's work, which — without prejudging the considerable developments of the late 19th and 20th centuries — recounts with simplicity and precision the History of the French Navy from its origins to the second half of the 19th century.
There is a long period " before Colbert " during which much was happening, but with limited means. Then comes the great era of Colbert's ministry. We witness the final wars of Louis XIV and the decline of the Navy under Louis XV. The revival takes place during the reign of Louis XVI, followed by the Navy of the First Republic and the First Empire. Finally, the principal maritime events from 1815 to the mid-19th century.
