The history of the 62 U-Boote that fought in the Mediterranean

During the summer of 1941, the British decimate the convoys crossing the Mediterranean to supply Rommel's Afrikakorps. The Kriegsmarine is called to the rescue!

The first U-Boote pass through the Strait of Gibraltar at the end of September 1941. After their combat mission against Royal Navy vessels supplying the stronghold of Tobruk, they put in at their first support base, the Greek island of Salamis, near Athens.

In November 1941, the grey wolves sink a battleship and an aircraft carrier; the first "Mediterranean" Knight's Crosses are awarded... From December onwards, the Italian arsenals at La Spezia and Pola welcome part of the 20 submarines of the new 29th U-Flotilla. Rest facilities are also established for their crews, who during their stopovers discover Rome, Venice and Pisa...

During the first ten months of 1942, following the destruction of numerous Royal Navy vessels and attacks on Allied convoys supplying the island of Malta, the balance of power in the Mediterranean shifted in favour of the Axis. But in November 1942, the U-Boote failed to halt the Allied armada that landed in North Africa. This operation marked the turning point of the Battle of the Mediterranean. The installation at La Spezia of a special platform behind the conning tower for additional Italian anti-aircraft machine guns proved insufficient to effectively counter the increasingly omnipresent Allied air forces.

In May 1943, Toulon becomes the main base for the U-Boote, who experience their "black month", while the Afrikakorps capitulates.
