The story of the 62 U-Boote that fought in the Mediterranean

With the Allies having taken control of the whole of North Africa in May 1943, the mission of the U-Boote in the Mediterranean changed. Henceforth, they were to protect "Fortress Europe" against the forthcoming Allied landings.

Five submarines set out against the Allied landing in Sicily in July 1943, which was nonetheless not halted. In the arsenals of Toulon and Pola, the submarines received a new double platform at the rear of the conning tower to increase their anti-aircraft armament, with 8 × 20 mm guns.

In September 1943, six seasoned commanders put to sea in an attempt to halt the Allied landing at Salerno — with some success. The use of acoustic torpedoes from November also allowed them to sink a greater number of enemy warships. In December, construction work on a submarine base in Marseille was halted by a massive bombing raid...

In early 1944, the submarines of the Mare Nostrum fought against the ships supplying the Allied Anzio beachhead; a 17th "Mediterranean" Knight's Cross was awarded. On 16 May 1944, a 62nd U-Boot passed through the Strait of Gibraltar — it would be the last reinforcement… The submarines, lying exposed in Toulon harbour awaiting a schnorchel, were progressively put out of action by American bombing raids… Only one sailed from Toulon to face the Allied armada assembled for the Provence landing on 15 August.

Three U-Boote, fitted with the schnorchel and sheltering in the eastern Mediterranean, survived until September 1944....
