Students of modern conflict are well acquainted with the difficulties encountered by the American army during the Second World War in the "green hell" of the Norman bocage following the landings of 6 June 1944. Despite their overwhelming material superiority, the "GIs" had struggled to advance during the "Battle of the Hedgerows" in June and July 1944 before breaking through the German front with Operation "Cobra".

Yet how many history enthusiasts remember that during the previous war, the « Sammies » or « Doughboys », the "elders" of the « GIs », had themselves faced immense difficulties during the autumn of 1918, struggling to break through the lines of a German army that was by then no more than a shadow of its former self?

In this work, Yves Buffetaut and Nicolas Czubak return, at ground level, to the most important and difficult battle fought by the American army during the First World War, with the aim of bringing a German-American perspective to bear.

The narrative, supported by more than 150 period photographs, is complemented by several texts by Quentin Gérard presenting the uniforms of the combatants from the various armies engaged.
