The Battle of Verdun began on 21 February 1916 and would last 300 days and 300 nights.

Not a day, not a night without fighting or bombardment. Each day was an ordeal for the combatants pinned down on a static front. These men — French soldiers and German soldiers alike — endured the same deprivations, the same suffering, the same horrors, the same fears and the same hatreds.

On the nameless hill, identified by its altitude, 18 May 1916 was neither among the quietest nor the most turbulent of days. It was marked by incessant bombardments and infantry assaults within the framework of "minor operations".

With this account, the author wishes to present a cross-narrative of the combatants, allowing readers to grasp these shared ordeals and the futility of the fighting on Hill 304 over the course of 24 hours. The sacrifice of these men must not be in vain, and all the soldiers killed — German and French alike — deserve, without distinction, a work of remembrance.
