This book traces the war of an ordinary soldier. In a sober style, Lucien Richard, a corporal conscripted into the 121st RI, gives a day-by-day account of the episodes of his campaign against Germany in 1940.

Setting off like his comrades — confident and determined — to aid Holland, he is forced to face the reality: aircraft and tanks give the Germans an overwhelming superiority. Lucien Richard takes part in the fighting retreat across Belgium. Falling ill, he loses contact with his regiment, manages with great difficulty to embark at Dunkirk for England, from where he returns two days later to fight on.

In bearing witness to the tragic events of 1940, Lucien Richard had no wish to cast himself as a hero. He shares his experiences as a fighting soldier. His account is peppered with descriptions and reflections of great documentary value, setting the record straight on many preconceived ideas about the conduct of French soldiers under fire.

One of the most honest and invaluable books on the disaster of 1940.
